The principal focus of this project was to assist the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) program in developing a spin forming fabrication process for manufacture of the Orion crew module (CM) aft pressure vessel bulkhead. The spin forming process will enable a single piece aluminum (Al) alloy 2219 aft bulkhead resulting in the elimination of the current multiple piece welded construction, simplify CM fabrication, and lead to an enhanced design. Phase I (NASA TM-2014-218163, (1)) of this...

Ti-6Al-4V plates were spin-forged into hemispheres so that the effect of the spinning process on plastic strain anisotropy could be examined. Spinning temperatures were varied from 400 to 1725F, and plastic strains in the longitudinal and transverse directions were measured. The plastic strain anistropy and texture developed by spin-forging were similar to those produced by other forms of processing and resulted in texture strengthening at low spinning temperatures.

The cut-and-try method of determining sheet metal formability has long been the standard practice in the aircraft industry. This two-volume report presents methods of determining formability analytically for the twelve most common processes of forming sheet metal. This method is based on utilization of a material's mechanical properties to predict formability. The first volume on development gives the procedure used to arrive at the objective of predicting formability. First, basic limit...

A standardized test procedure for simulating the dynamic wetting and solidification behavior during melt spinning was designed and is being used to generate pheonomenological information for various combinations of melt and substrate that would be desired. Real differences in dynamic wetting/solidification patterns have been found and suggested correlations with melt spinning performance have been proposed. Concurrently a set of melt spinning experiments are being conducted to provide...

The principal effort was to study technical feasibility and cost aspects of the production technique of spin forming a subreflector reflective surface to a desired surface of revolution, back the surface with fiberglass to stabilize it sufficiently so that it may be machined to the target surface tolerance of .008 inches Root Mean Square (RMS) with a goal of .003 inches RMS. To verify this production technique, analyses was performed to define the production procedure. A price estimate for a...

The baseline process sequence using nontextured square wafers was integrated. Difficulties encountered include: (1) replacement of the N-250 spray on diffusion source with PX-10 source; and (2) modification of the firing for printed silver and aluminum contracts is required to accommodate the change of wafer size and shape. Results indicate that the cells processed through the entire process sequence except laser scribe and spray on AR coating indicate the process sequence is feasible. Greater...

GRCop-84 (Cu-8 at.% Cr-4 at.% Nb) has been under development at the NASA Glenn Research Center for several years. The alloy possesses a unique combination of good thermal conductivity, high elevated temperature strength, long creep life, and long low-cycle- fatigue. The alloy is also more oxidation resistant than pure copper and most competitive alloys. The combination of properties has attracted attention from major rocket engine manufacturers who are interested in the alloy for the combustion...

A major improvement in flow-turning technique was developed with subscale parts. The effects of roller geometry, mandrel speed, wall thickness reduction per pass, and roller-feed rate on radial growth and local bulging were determined. It was found that roller geometry had the most predominant effect on dimensional control and a new roller design with parabolic contours was developed which gave positive control of diametral growth. A correlation of flow-turning parameters was developed which...

Three selected alloys; Type H-11 tool steel, AM 355 semiaustenitic stainless steel, and 18NiCoMo (300) maraging steel, were fabricated into biaxial pressure vessel test specimens. For the fabrication of the biaxial pressure vessel test specimens, designed experiments were utilized to evaluate a variety of processing and heat treat variables. The fabricated pressure vessels (i.e. tubes) were tested to failure in a hydrostatic test facility and evaluated for selection of an optimum material and...

Precipitation at 450 C was studied in melt-spun ribbons containing up to 15 wt.% Mn in solid solution in Al. The as-spun ribbons were microsegregation-free at compositions up to 5 wt.% Mn, but in more concentrated alloys a cellular micro-structure was present. Upon annealing, four precipitate phases are observed, some of them being found preferentially on cell boundaries and others within the cells. Al6Mn, G and the G phase can coexist for long times at 450 C, but the G phase appears to be...

Formability and abnormal grain growth (AGG) are the two major issues that have been encountered for Al alloy spun formed dome development using friction stir welded blanks. Material properties that have significant influence on the formability include forming range and strain hardening exponent. In this study, tensile tests were performed for two 2195 friction stir weld parameter sets at 400 F to study the effects of post weld anneal on the forming range and strain hardening exponent. It was...

This work focused on the preparation, structure, and properties of Fe-Nd-B permanent magnets. The rapidly expanding literature on Fe-R-B compounds and magnets was reviewed, and production of Fe14Nd2B by a reduction-diffusion process was successfully demonstrated. Supporting work at Vanderbilt University involved Mossbauer measurements on melt-spun Fe-R-B alloys and preparation of Fe-R-B by plasma-arc deposition.

Toughening and other property enhancements of composite materials are typically implemented by-modifying the bulk properties of the constituents, either the fiber or matrix materials. This often leads to difficulties in processing and higher material costs. Many composites consist of tows or yarns (thousands of individual fibers) that are either filament wound or processed into a fabric by weaving or braiding. The matrix material can be added to the tow or fabric before final processing,...

This is the second progress report of a five month program to demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing superconducting wires form YBa2Cu307-x, consisting of a small ceramic core with a copper cladding. The ceramic core is to be produced from a dry spun ceramic fiber, sintered to create a 010 fiber texture to enhance critical current. The sintered fiber is to be clad with copper by electroplating. The sintering and microstructure development of YBa2Cu307-x has been characterized for as...

Single-piece, spin-formed domes manufactured from friction stir welded (FSW) plates of Al-Li alloy 2195 have the potential to reduce the cost of fabricating cryogenic propellant tanks. Mechanical properties in the completed domes can be related directly to the final material condition and the microstructures developed. However, these new fabrication techniques have resulted in unexpected material challenges, such as abnormal grain growth in the weld nugget and the propensity for fracture in the...
